  10.     Welcome to the puzzling world of CPU.  We sincerely hope that you like  
  11.     our puzzles and enjoy many hours of pleasure solving them.              
  12.                                                                             
  13.     Minimum system requirements are a Super-VGA color monitor with 1024 x
  14.     768 resolution and a hard drive.  IBM compatibility is also required,
  15.     including the use of standard graphics processing.  Third party and     
  16.     proprietary graphics systems (such as Tandy) may not work.  RAM memory  
  17.     requirements vary according to the type of puzzle being solved, but the 
  18.     highest require only approximately 400k available.  There are no known  
  19.     conflicts with any existing memory-resident programs.

  21.     To install this shareware version of the software package, simply expand
  22.     the files into a subdirectory.  The subdirectory can be named anything  
  23.     you prefer, but ALL of the EXE and PUZ files must be present in the     
  24.     subdirectory.

  26.     To run the program once it has been expanded, enter the name of the     
  27.     program control module, which is CPU, and then press Return.  The       
  28.     control module must be used, and when loaded you will see the main menu,
  29.     which is as follows:

  31.     F1  Help                 -  On-line help for the main module and        
  32.                                 general help for the overall package.       
  33.                                                                             
  34.     F2  Solve Puzzles        -  This is what you use to select the type     
  35.                                 of puzzle to solve.                         
  36.                                                                             
  37.     F3  Install New Puzzles  -  This is used to install additional puzzles  
  38.                                 if you get more puzzles at a later time.    
  39.                                                                             
  40.     Esc Exit Program         -  Returns you to DOS

  43.     This shareware version contains the solving programs and 57 puzzles.
  44.     These 57 puzzles include at least one of each type, and the difficulties
  45.     vary.  This gives you an idea as to what we offer.  We produce many of  
  46.     the same types of puzzles found in all the popular puzzle magazines and 
  47.     books, as well as many which are unique to CPU.  With respect to the    
  48.     puzzles with which you may be familiar, we at CPU strive to improve upon
  49.     the standard, making ours bigger and better whenever possible.

  52.     All puzzle types are available in three levels of difficulty, but some  
  53.     puzzles are inherently difficult and cannot be made truly easy.  Super  
  54.     Bowl A Word, Synograms, and Antograms can be particularly difficult, for
  55.     example, because in each of these puzzles, you must unscramble          
  56.     anagrammed words up to 15 characters in length.  For these types, even  
  57.     the easy category can be quite challenging.

  59.     With some exceptions, the easy level of puzzles are fairly simple, and  
  60.     can be used as introductions to the puzzles.  This is also a good choice
  61.     for children as an educational device, and it allows individuals to
  62.     challenge themselves to whatever extent they desire.

  64.     No special knowledge of puzzles is required, and each type of puzzle has
  65.     on-line help which explains the puzzle, describes how to proceed, and   
  66.     offers tips for solving.  An additional feature unavailable with written
  67.     forms of puzzles is the built-in solving assistance available within    
  68.     each puzzle.  This assistance differs with each puzzle, but usually     
  69.     there are three levels of assistance available.  This feature can be    
  70.     used when you get "stuck" and need help.  For example, the assistance in
  71.     a word puzzle might range from having the program give you a letter, or 
  72.     a whole word, or finishing the puzzle for you.  In addition, all puzzle 
  73.     types which have only one correct solution have an option to show you   
  74.     any errors made thus far, but does not correct them for you.

  76.     Another advantage of computerized puzzling is the ease in which you can 
  77.     correct mistakes.  If you've ever solved a puzzle of any type on paper  
  78.     and ended up with a scribbled and erased mess, you'll appreciate the    
  79.     convenience of keeping your puzzle clean and still being able to "try   
  80.     out" possible answers, changing them if they prove to be incorrect.

  82.     Still another convenient feature of our product is the ability to save  
  83.     your work, and then pick it up again at some later time.  Some of the   
  84.     more difficult puzzles provide hours of fun all by themselves, but you  
  85.     may not have as much time as it would take to solve them in one sitting.

  87.     Enclosed with this package is an order form, which shows all currently  
  88.     available types of puzzles.  We are always expanding and adding more    
  89.     types of puzzles, including our own unique puzzles and CPU versions of  
  90.     standard puzzles, so this list changes frequently.

  92.     You may order more puzzles at any time, which we provide in groups of   
  93.     thirty, and we also offer a subscription service which allows you to    
  94.     receive puzzles on a monthly basis at a discounted rate.  With either   
  95.     method, print and use the order form provided to select the puzzle types
  96.     and difficulty levels you prefer.  Subscribers are also free to change  
  97.     their preferences each month as they desire.  Even if your puzzle       
  98.     preferences remain the same, we will never send you the same puzzle     
  99.     twice, you always get unique, original high-quality puzzles.

  101.     Compared to magazines, this is an excellent way to increase your        
  102.     puzzling pleasure, since you get to choose what puzzles you get each    
  103.     time.  If you have a few particular favorites, you may have found you   
  104.     can't get enough of them in magazines because you can only get what they
  105.     provide.  We hope you also enjoy the ease and convenience of solving    
  106.     puzzles on your computer.  We are always looking for new and unique     
  107.     puzzles, or variations on the old standards.  If you have an idea,      
  108.     please let us know.

  111.     Exchange, Locked In Words, Magic Squares, Word Solitaire, Figure Logic, 
  112.     Number Quilt, and Word Links.

  116.     files and documentation are transferred as a single package.  You are   
  117.     not permitted to make printed copies of the puzzles.
